The Establishment phase is crucial time during the first 2 weeks of term when we establish our rules, routines and expectations for each class for the session.
We do not use jotters during this time and we do not issue homework (P1 excepted).
There is a clear rationale to this which allows children to know exactly what our expectations are, about all aspects of school and most importantly the routines and expectations in class related to reading, spelling, maths and numeracy. During this time teachers are using many formative assessment strategies alongside the information we have from more formal assessments done at the end of last term, to ensure they get to know exactly where the children are in relation to their learning.
We know this then pays dividends for a coherent experience across the rest of the session.
