We are beginning to set up a link with members of the Bonnyrigg Senior Social Forum as part of our work for Community Month. The plan is that members of the Forum will come into school to spend time with the pupils. During this time the children will share pieces of work, and perhaps some singing and dancing with the Forum. They will also interview the Forum representatives to establish ideas they may have for our meetings.
Our Fish in Room 11 novel study has been a great success. The pupils have taken part in activities such as Conscience Alley and Hot Seating. They have worked co-operatively to discuss plot and storyline, as well as make predictions, and are continuing to develop individual mind maps showing their thoughts about each character and its relationships with others.
Mrs Doyle is looking forward to seeing her pupils when they return after the ‘snow break’ and hearing how they spent their week. Before the Christmas break we HOPE to complete a series of lessons about Electricity and simple circuits.
There’s something fishy going on in p4x…
P4x have been enjoying their novel study of ‘The Fish in Room 11’ by Heather Dyer. The story is about a young boy named Toby who makes a fishy discovery which changes his life forever. We won’t tell you too much more as we don’t want to spoil the story for others that may read it!
We have completed lots of exciting activities related to the novel such as ‘hot-seating’ the characters, writing a newspaper article, taking Toby through a ‘conscience alley’ and producing a beautiful display of the setting and characters.
We have also been busy getting to know our new teacher as well as some new friends we have made in Poland. We are very excited to begin our ‘eTwinning’ project with a school in Aleksandrów, Poland. We are going to be exchanging information about how we celebrate Christmas in Scotland and will be sending some Seasons Greetings! We will tell you all about it next time.
P4Y thoroughly enjoyed their ‘Joyning the Learning’ theme, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The Wonka Night was very well supported and the children proudly took their families on a tour of the factory. Over £40 was raised from the sale of cakes kindly donated and the children will discuss at Class Council how they wish this money to be spent.
This term should be equally as exciting. We are about to begin our novel study “The Fish in Room 11”, we will also begin to establish a link with the Bonnyrigg Senior Social Forum and have enlisted the expertise of Mrs Mitchell from the nursery to help us learn some ballroom and Latin American dances during our PE sessions – think Strictly Come Dancing!
Primary 4X really enjoyed our ‘Joyning the Learning’ topic last term on ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’ As a class we made Golden Tickets and Wonka Bars, wrote newspaper articles and stories about the factory, learned how to calculate change in ‘Wonka’s Wonderful Sweet Shop’, acted out scenes from the book and even learned an Oompa Loompa dance!
We had an open parents evening to give tours of our own ‘Chocolate Factory’ which the pupils really enjoyed. Thank you to all the parents and guardians that came along to our evening and for all the positive comments!
The class also learned about other countries in the Commonwealth and worked co-operatively in groups to present the information they had found, pupils said that they really enjoyed having the freedom to do their own research.
This term we are focusing our learning around ‘The Fish in Room 11,’ a novel by Heather Dyer. The children will carry out various activities linked to this and will have it as their main reading book.
The class have been working very hard and I’m sure this will continue in the lead up to Christmas!
